Crossing to the Balearics
From Roussillon or Languedoc, Menorca is the first major stop to the south. A fine offshore passage… provided you pick your window well.
Distances and duration
As a rough guide, from the Gulf of Lion (Port-Vendres / Cap d'Agde area) to Menorca, reckon on the order of 110 to 150 nautical miles depending on your starting point — that is, at an average of 5–6 knots, roughly 20 to 28 hours at sea. This is a passage with one night at sea: setting up watches is essential.

The winds to watch
- Mistral / tramontane (north): can make leaving the gulf lively and kick up a short, steep sea. Often fair towards the south, but tiring when strong.
- Southerly winds (marin, libeccio): uncomfortable close-hauled work and a head sea — best avoided on this route.
- Transition zones: the wind may drop away mid-passage (expect some motoring) or strengthen near the islands.
The ideal window: a moderate northerly flow (15–20 knots) pushing towards the Balearics, without a strong mistral/tramontane blow, and lasting long enough to cover the whole crossing plus a margin.
