Checking the weather offline at sea
Offshore, your signal disappears fast. The fix: download your area while still at the dock so wind, waves and currents stay available with no connection.
Why plan ahead
Just a few miles from the coast, mobile coverage becomes unreliable. Relying on 4G to refresh the weather mid-passage is risky. The idea is simple: prepare your data ashore, where the connection is solid, then check it offline.
The method in 3 steps
- 1️⃣ Before leaving, create an area over the region you'll be sailing.
- 2️⃣ Download it (wind, gusts, waves, currents… as needed).
- 3️⃣ At sea, open the area: the forecast displays with no signal.
Good habit: download just before you cast off, so you set out with the most recent run. The forecast stays as it was at download time — it does not update without a signal.
Example
Passage to the Balearics: the day before, in port, you create and download the Gulf of Lion → Menorca area. Underway, even without 4G, you track how the wind and sea evolve hour by hour.
Keeping safety in mind
A downloaded forecast is a snapshot: remember that it ages. For long passages, plan a way to update it (VHF marine safety broadcasts, GRIB over a satellite link) and always cross-check it against what you actually observe on board.
